News and Announcements
Ever wonder how your player’s development plan gets developed? Hockey Canada has provided a framework for hockey associations to follow.
Hockey Canada has developed the Long Term Player Development Programming Framework:
“This model for hockey has been developed based on the following principles:
• doing the right thing for the player at the right stage in their development
• adopting a player-centered approach and not treating the development of all players the same way
• the broader the foundation of players the more successful the game of hockey will be in Canada
• viewing player development as a long term process
• aligning player development resources (skills manuals, DVDs) with coach development and education resources so that coaches are doing the right things at the right time
• a need to better educate parents on the hockey development of their child – it is okay for parents to want their kids to get to the highest levels but they need to know the best way to go about it"
If you’d like more information pertaining to this plan, please check under the Documents tab on the menu bar, or go to https://az184419.vo.msecnd.net/hockey-canada/Hockey-Programs/Coaching/Downloads/long_term_player_development_framework_sept_2013.pdf

Hi Atom parents,
Atom evaluations will soon be under way and I’d like to take the time to tell you about the Atom development program.
The Atom development program is designed for players who have the desire and ability to play at more competitive level. Atom development is open to players aged 9 and 10 (2007/2008). The goal of the program is to achieve a degree of excellence, according to a players interest and potential, while providing an opportunity for achievement in an enjoyable self-fulfilling environment with the goal to stimulate development both from an individual and overall sport point of view, potentially developing skills to progress to the representative program. Atom development will require a higher level of commitment from both players and parents. This year’s seeding tournament is September 15-17, is in Salmon Arm which SMHA Atom development will be attending. This tournament determines which tier/level they will be playing in, this could mean that extra travel is involved.
SMHA encourages all Atom aged kids come for an evaluation, the evaluation is not mandatory. Although this is not considered a “try-out” it is important that if your child is wanting to play Atom development then they should attend all the evaluation ice times. SMHA asks that you please refrain from discussing the evaluation process with coaches and evaluators.
SMHA will provide evaluators. After evaluations are done, Coaches will review evaluations from independent evaluators. The kids will be divided into two teams, an Atom development and an Atom recreational. Development coaches will talk to the kids individually after the last ice session, letting them know where they would be best suited for development.
